On my last crystal shopping trip, I was wandering up and down the rows and rows of amethyst, rose quartz and more when my eyes landed on a jade roller, tucked away at the bottom of a cabinet.
I’ve been seeing it all over Instagram lately and heard about how trendy it is. So I figured, well, I’m on this crystal kick right now. Why not buy it?

In reality, jade rollers are an age-old skincare tool. They are believed to be able to brighten your complexion, diminish fine lines — think of all the tension you hold in your face — and boost your mood.
Historically, jade has been used to draw out and protect against negative chi (energetic life force) — particularly by royalty in ancient China.
According to Chinese medicine, when your chi is imbalanced, you can feel any number of physical or mental symptoms, including anxiety, fatigue and pain.
Using a jade roller is also believed to increase blood circulation, reduce puffiness, inflammation and swelling, tighten pores, assist lymphatic drainage and massage your moisturizer into your skin (though, some people prefer rolling before moisturizing).
It’s been a few weeks since I started using the jade roller and to be honest, I’m really enjoying it. To my surprise, I have been noticing quite a change. The biggest difference, especially during the winter, is that my face is showing fewer signs of the harsh weather — it’s not dry or in shock from the frigid winds. It feels much smoother, softer and healthier.
How do you use a jade roller? You can start at your neck and move upwards towards your forehead. Alternatively, you can follow the contours of your face or start in the centre and move outwards. There are a lot of websites that will tell you a million things, but I say you’ll know what feels right for you.
The best time? In the morning. The stone is cold, so it’s a soothing way to wake up your face and start the day. It’s also a nice way to end the day, if you’re like me and want to do it twice.
